New US fantasy TV series being made in NZ
Video interview with Craig Parker with some nice Lucy as Xena footage.

West Auckland has been over-run with wizards and seekers the past few months.

The people who brought us Hercules and Xena are at work on a whole new world.

Legend of the Seeker, a TV series based on The Sword of Truth novels by Terry Goodkind, hit screens in the US in November.

It's shot entirely in New Zealand, and as Film3 discovered, has a few familiar faces in the lead roles.

Kiwi actor Craig Parker is of course no stranger to the fantasy genre after starring in the Lord of the Rings trilogy.

Now, gone are the ears, and gone are the good intentions. In Legend of the Seeker Parker goes from Elven good guy, to Darken Rahl - not so good guy.

"It's always better to play the baddie," says Parker. "You get to do cooler things, get cooler lines, its much less work than playing the hero.

"You basically lurk in your lair, every now and then you kill someone and you get the hair and clothes."

Along with his fellow cast and crew, Parker began shooting the series four months ago. There's obviously a rather medieval feel to the series and like Lord of the Rings before it, there has been plenty of on-location shooting in both the North and South Islands of New Zealand.

Xena and Hercules became cult hits, running for ten years and pumping money and jobs into the local television and film industry.

Legend of the Seeker premiered on US television on the first of November last year and if it continues to rate well in these tough times, a second series will get the green light.

There is no word yet on whether the show will make it onto Kiwi screens - but for now, Parker reckons it's a good advertisement for a holiday down under, saying: "The show does look beautiful - a tourism ad really, except for the monsters and the demons and the death."

Many thanks to Barbara Davies for the info.

Michael Hurst Interview On TV NZ
Here's a nice interview with Michael Hurst and some quotes from Rob about LotS, including a video interview (which can only be viewed if you live in NZ).

In part it reads:

At a time when many industries are letting staff go those in Auckland's film and TV industry are getting a boost.

A new big budget American TV series, Legend of the Seeker, is being shot in Henderson, injecting more than $10 million into the local economy.

New Zealand is a fantasy location, the perfect place to shoot the new series. There's an array of landscapes within a stones throw of the Waitakere City studio, all at a down to earth budget.

"The beauty is these people know how to stretch a dollar so although the production looks very big, by American television standards this would be a low budget television production," says Rob Tapert, producer

Bridget Regan - Finding What She is Seeking
bridget01.jpg Bridget Regan - Finding What She is Seeking

It is the afternoon before Halloween and Bridget Regan is excited about her costume; a T-shirt and jeans. That’s right — just a normal, comfortable outfit. “I’m in costume and hair and makeup so much these days,” she explains, reminiscing on the times just a few years ago when she and her girls would go all out on Halloweens in Manhattan. “This show has made me really low maintenance.”

Over the past six months Regan has called the picturesque terrain of New Zealand her home while shooting the first 22 episodes of the Disney / ABC Family series Legend of the Seeker, an epic fantasy series based on “The Sword of Truth” novels by Terry Goodkind. Think The Lord of the Rings trilogy as a television series — fewer battle scenes and no nosy little hobbits, but plenty of sorcery, sword-play, and dramatic sets to keep both boy and girl fans entertained. Regan stars as Kahlan Amnell, a beautiful witch in a mythical world who must guide and protect an unsuspecting young peasant — Australian newcomer Craig Horner — who has been deemed the legendary Seeker, th hero who will free her land and people from the tyranny of evil. “It’s amazing to play a character where I’ve literally had to transform who I am as a person, where I had to do more then blow dry my hair for an audition,” Regan says.

'Seeker' marks return of fantasy-action genre
Saturday, December 20, 2008 3:06 AM
By Brooks Barnes

Sam Raimi and Rob Tapert know that better than anybody else. Before Raimi went off to turn Spider-Man into a multibillion-dollar movie franchise, the two were credited with creating a genre of television beloved (at least for a time) around the globe: the syndicated fantasy-action drama. Heavy on dragons and fire, their Hercules: The Legendary Journeys and Xena: Warrior Princess were both pop-culture phenomena in the mid-1990s.

Audiences eventually overdosed on the genre, largely because production companies flooded the market with copycats. At least 65 syndicated one-hour dramas arrived from 1991 to 2000, with Conan: The Adventurer, Highlander and others borrowing from the Raimi-Tapert formula.

A changing TV industry accelerated the genre's death, and by 2007, not a single syndicated drama was in production. With the clutter cleared, Raimi and Tapert are back.
