Question: Does negative reaction to Legend of the Seeker make a second season less likely? I know many fans of the book are harshly speaking out against the series, but I love the show. -- Maria O.

Matt Roush: The worst thing that could happen to a show like this is for it to be ignored by its fan base. The show did not get very positive reviews (including from me), and I'm not keeping up with fan reaction, positive or negative. But what will determine Seeker's future has all to do with business: how well it performs in syndication for the local stations and how well it sells in the overseas markets. I haven't seen any early returns yet, but Disney has made quite an investment with launching this new fantasy series into syndication, so I'd expect them to stick with it unless it proves to be an utter dud. But while I'm on the subject of TV fantasy, I wanted to revisit the topic of HBO's adaptation of George R.R. Martin's A Game of Thrones (the Song of Ice and Fire series). HBO has officially green-lit a pilot, based on a truly terrific (though currently still unfinished) series of novels. This is no guarantee the show will go to series, but it's a good sign.

New Action-Adventure Epic Fantasy Series Available For Purchase After Each Initial Broadcast

Burbank, CA November 5, 2008 Disney-ABC Domestic Television today announced that "Legend of the Seeker," the new nationally-syndicated epic fantasy series, is available for purchase and download on the iTunes Store (www.iTunes.com) after each initial broadcast. Each original episode from the first season (22 episodes in all) will be available for purchase and download the Monday after its initial weekend broadcast premiere, and can be purchased for just $1.99 in standard definition; $2.99 in high definition; or a Season Pass is available for $34.99 in standard definition or $49.99 in high definition. From ABC Studios and executive producers Sam Raimi and Rob Tapert and distributed by Disney-ABC Domestic Television, the action-adventure series premiered the weekend of November 1st and is the only first-run syndicated series available on the iTunes Store.

Synopsis:
Denfir, a bounty hunter, pays a visit to Sebastian, the cartographer, because he needs a map that can track Richard. While Richard, Kahlan and Zedd are unsuccessfully trying to catch a rabbit, Denfir and his henchmen capture them in some snares that leave them hanging upside down. Later on, Denfir tracks down Rolf, who stole the map earlier and demands that he hand it over. They fight and the map tears in half making them realize that they are better off working together.

Sam Rami and crew bring Terry Goodkind's best-selling series to TV with Legend of the Seeker

Wizard's First Rule, the first book in Terry Goodkind's popular The Sword of Truth series, came to life this weekend as a nationally syndicated television show entitled Legend of the Seeker. And it's not just some random, fly-by-night production, but rather Sam Raimi and Rob Tapert's long-awaited return to television following such shows as Hercules: The Legendary Journeys, Xena: Warrior Princess, Cleopatra 2525 and Jack of All Trades.


Legend of the Seeker, which kicked off this weekend, stars Bridget Regan, Craig Horner and Bruce Spence. Horner plays Richard, a young guide whose ordinary existence takes a turn for the bizarre when he discovers that he's a Seeker, a figure destined to protect his world, the Midlands, from the encroaching evil of Darken Rahl (Craig Parker). By the prophesied one's side are Kahlan (Regan), a beautiful Confessor with unique magical powers, and Zedd (Spence). Viewers can expect romance, or unconsummated romance, since Kahlan and Richard have the hots for each other but can't act on it, as well as plenty of action, fights and visual effects.


SCI FI Weekly recently spoke with Raimi, Tapert, Regan and Horner. Raimi and Tapert were together on a conference call with reporters, while Regan and Horner took the phone separately for exclusive conversations.

'Legend of the Seeker' Premiere Draws Viewers

Improved in time periods by average of 15% compared to prior month

Disney-ABC's new, first-run weekly hour, Legend of the Seeker, turned in respectable premiere ratings, improving its time periods by an average of 15% compared to the prior month. Legend of the Seeker scored a 1.5 rating/3 share primary-run average among 54 metered markets.

The results are particularly noteworthy considering the show faced strong competition from a dramatic college football game in which number-seven ranked Texas Tech beat cross-state rival and number-one ranked University of Texas in, literally, the final second of the game.

In top markets, Legend of the Seeker improved time periods by 14% on Tribune-owned KPIX New York, 80% on Tribune-owned WGN Chicago, 117% on Hearst-Argyle-owned WCVB Boston, 30% on Gannett-owned WATL Atlanta, 67% on Tribune-owned WDCW Washington, D.C., and 33% on Tribune-owned KIAH Houston.

The show's performance improved 21% from Saturday to Sunday, moving from a 1.4/3 on Saturday, Nov. 1, to a 1.7/3 on Sunday, Nov. 2

In key demographics, Legend of the Seeker improved Oct. 2008 time periods by as much as 40% among men 25-54, 25% among men 18-49 and 20% among women 18-49, among all airings of the show.

Legend of the Seeker - Fun Escapism Fantasy TV

This past weekend marked the 2 hour premiere of the much anticipated new syndicated fantasy series LEGEND OF THE SEEKER. Based on the SWORD OF TRUTH book by bestselling author Terry Goodkind and produced by Sam Rami (Spiderman) and Rob Tapert (Xena, Hercules.) together the 3 men bring the characters from the novels to life to introduce Richard, Kahlan, and Zedd to a broader audience. The series is the first foray into fantasy syndicated television since HERCULES and XENA went off of the air over 5 years ago. Rob Tapert who produced both of those series is on board with LEGEND to push the genre in a new direction taking it from camp and elevating it to a more serious, FX filled, and approachable formula that should attract fans of Fantasy films.

In four years, Bridget Regan has gone from the School of Drama at UNC School of the Arts to a medieval realm called Westland.

She has a leading role in Legend of the Seeker, a new fantasy adventure series from producers Sam Raimi and Rob Tapert, the team behind Xena: Warrior Princess, Hercules: The Legendary Journeys and the Spider-Man movies. The series will make its debut at 6 p.m. today on WMYV channel 48 (cable channel 15 on Time Warner).

Regan has known that she wanted to act since she was a child growing up in San Diego. In high school, she went to a summer conservatory. "One of the teachers there raved about Gerald Freedman and said this is the man to learn from, and that I should go where he is teaching."
