Craig Interview on SciFi Wire - Q&A: Legend Star Horner

Q&A: Legend Star Horner

The following interview is on SciFi Wire - contributed by MET

Lucy Lawless, Kevin Sorbo, Gina Torres ... and Craig Horner?

Producers Rob Tapert and Sam Raimi have a knack for choosing talent, as they tapped Lawless for Xena: Warrior Princess, Sorbo for Hercules: The Legendary Journeys and Torres for Cleopatra 2525. And then there's Horner, the handsome Aussie actor the producers chose for their latest syndicated fantasy TV show, Legend of the Seeker. Based on Terry Goodkind's novel Wizard's First Rule, Legend of the Seeker stars Horner as the title Seeker, a figure of prophecy who--with the help of a wizard (Bruce Spence as Zedd) and a powerful and gorgeous Confessor (Bridget Regan as Kahlan)--is destined to save his people and their world from the clutches of evil. The following are edited excerpts of SCI FI Wire's interview with Horner. Legend of the Seeker debuts in syndication on the weekend of Nov. 1.

Pittsburgh Post Gazette Syndicated 'Legend' turns back time

Pittsburgh Post Gazette Syndicated 'Legend' turns back time Tuned In Friday, October 31, 2008

Back in the early 1990s, following the success of "Star Trek: The Next Generation," first-run syndication became a popular non-network platform for studio-produced product. (Syndicated shows are produced by a Hollywood studio and sold directly to stations -- or station groups -- rather than being sold to a network.) "ST:NG" begat "War of the Worlds," "Babylon 5," "Friday the 13th: The Series," "Hercules," "Xena: Warrior Princess," "Andromeda" and "Mutant X." As the 1990s faded, so did first-run syndicated dramas, both because of the rise of The WB and UPN on formerly independent stations and in part due to so many basic cable networks launching original scripted series.

New Interview with Rob and Sam from MovieWeb

The following is from MovieWeb and they sit down with Rob and Sam to discuss Legend of the Seeker:

The executive producers on this new first-run syndication series talk about bringing the fantasy genre back to the small screen. Once upon a time in the 90s, first-run syndication was big. Baywatch, Hercules: The Legendary Journeys and Xena: Warrior Princess were all big hits in the format, but it, and the fantasy genre on the small screen have since faded away, until now. Rob Tapert, who was behind both Hercules: The Legendary Journeys and Xena: Warrior Princess has now teamed up with genre icon Sam Raimi for a brand new first-run syndication series entitled Legend of the Seeker, which will premiere on Saturday, November 1 (Click Here! to find out the times and channels this series will be broadcast in your area). I was in on a conference call with Raimi and Tapert, the two executive producers of this new series, and here's what they had to say about their new foray into fantasy. You were one of the first, with Xena: Warrior Princess to show really strong women on TV. What have you noticed about television since then and also, this woman seems to be the same kind of action hero, but maybe in a different way. Xena was bigger and stronger than some of the guys she was fighting and this one doesn't seem to be. Can you describe this new female hero?

Bridget on The View - Screencaptures and Video

Added Bridget's interview on The View - the wmv version of the video clip will be uploaded soon. The screencaptures are now ready as well - we get a few new pics from LotS which are exciting.

Bridget is such a fun character and she reminds me a little of a very young Lucy Lawless in her vivaciousness and candour. Her excitement about the show is quite evident and is quite infectious to the point of getting Joy (one of the co-hosts interested in the show although Joy's joke about Kiwis is as old as the hills).

Available as a Free Download Exclusively on the iTunes Store

Burbank, CA - October 27, 2008 - Action-adventure fans can enjoy a first look of the highly-anticipated epic fantasy series "Legend of the Seeker" before its November 1st premiere weekend. Beginning today, Disney-ABC Domestic Television is offering an extended preview of the nationally-syndicated series as a free download, exclusively available on the iTunes Store (www.iTunes.com). The free download, entitled "Legend of the Seeker: A First Look," will give fans the opportunity to view the first 30-minutes of the upcoming two-hour television event executive-produced by Sam Raimi and Rob Tapert, the team that brought the characters of  Hercules and Xena to life almost a decade ago.

"Fans have been clamoring to get a first look at the series and based on the early response from the clips released on the 'Legend of the Seeker' website, we knew this would be a huge success with audiences," noted Janice Marinelli, President, Disney-ABC Domestic Television.

Shot with the exotic and rugged New Zealand landscape as its backdrop, the one-hour scripted series is an adaptation of internationally best- selling author Terry Goodkind's Sword of Truth book series.  "Legend of the Seeker" explores the adventures of woodsman Richard Cypher (Craig Horner, "Monarch Cove" and "Blue Water High"), who discovers that he was born to fulfill a prophecy of becoming a guardian hero to oppressed people. With the help of a mysterious woman named Kahlan (Bridget Regan, "Sex and the City" and "Six Degrees") and a wise old wizard named Zedd (Bruce Spence, "Mad Max 2" and "The Matrix Revolutions"), he must stop a ruthless and bloodthirsty tyrant named Darken Rahl (Craig Parker, "The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring" and "The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers") from unleashing an ancient evil and enslaving the world.

"Legend of the Seeker" is produced by ABC Studios, marking their first venture into broadcast syndication.  Sam Raimi ("Spider-Man," "Spider- Man 2," "Spider-Man 3" and "The Evil Dead"), Rob Tapert ("The Grudge," "Xena: Warrior Princess," "Hercules: The Legendary Journeys" and  "Cleopatra 2525"), Joshua Donen ("The Quick and the Dead"), Ned Nalle  (production executive for "Xena: Warrior Princess" and "Hercules: The  Legendary Journeys") and Ken Biller ("Star Trek: Voyager" and "Six  Degrees") serve as executive producers.

"Legend of the Seeker" has been cleared by Disney-ABC Domestic Television in more than 95 percent of the country, including all of the top 50 markets.  The series will premiere with a two-hour event  the weekend of November 1st (www.LegendoftheSeeker.com for times and  channels).

New LotS Article - Entertainment Weekly Plus Scan

Entertainment Weekly 31 October 2008 Inside Look - Legend of the Seeker. In he mid-'90s, mythical heroes Hercules and Xena ran wild on the small screen, slaying enough monsters and spewing enough one-liners to earn their rightful place in TV history as the true titans of cheesy syndicated action-adventure. Though the leather-clad warriors had disappeared by 2002, executive producers Sam Raimi and Rob Tapert never believed their fans went away...

Craig and Bridget Interviewed from New Zealand on WBNX

The following is from the WBNX blog

On set with Legend of the Seeker's 'Richard'

While viewers are excited about next week's premiere of Legend of the Seeker, TV industry execs are downright giddy with anticipation.  "It has the potential to be a game changer," one programming VP tells MediaWeek.  "The (fantasy-adventure) genre has great potential, especially now that everybody has big-screen, high-definition TVs and are looking for something lush with lots of special effects."  Based on Terry Goodkind's twelve Sword of Truth novels, Seeker is expected to revive syndicated escapism popularized by Hercules and Xena a decade ago.

WBNX interviewed Craig Horner (Richard) and Bridget Regan (Kahlan) yesterday live from New Zealand, and we plan to have it posted online within a few days.

Rob Tapert and Sam Raimi Interview - Part 1

Scifi.com has the first part of an interview with Rob and Sam about Legend of the Seeker:

Q&A: Seeker Producers Spill!

Sam Raimi and Rob Tapert, executive producers of the upcoming syndicated fantasy show Legend of the Seeker, told reporters it was their goal to capture the essence of and remain true to the spirit of its source material, Wizard's First Rule, the first book in author Terry Goodkind's Sword of Truth series of books.

Legend of the Seeker follows the adventures of Richard Cypher (Craig Horner), a seemingly average young man who discovers that he is a child of prophecy and possesses magical powers. Helping him harness those powers is a Confessor, the mysterious and gorgeous Kahlan (Bridget Regan), and an old Wizard, Zedd (Bruce Spence). On a weekly basis, amidst action, romance and magic, the trio must face off against Darken Rahl (Craig Parker), an evil emperor who aims to enslave the world.

SCI FI Wire was on the line on Oct. 15 when Raimi and Tapert--who'd previously produced such shows as Hercules: The Legendary Journeys, Cleopatra 2525 and Xena: Warrior Princess--joined reporters for a conference call. The following is part one of a two-part Q&A featuring edited excerpts of the conversation. A nationally syndicated first-run series, Legend of the Seeker will premiere on Nov. 1.Read more

New LotS Article - Compares LotS to Xena and Hercules

Here's another article about the upcoming premiere of LotS with a ubiquitous Xena Promo pic (happens to be one of my favourite Xena promo pics) and how LotS won't be in the style of Xena (I hope it gets the ratings Xena got because it beat out Baywatch and Star Trek Deep Space Nine to be the highest syndicated drama...there's a lot to love about that show and if LotS matches or surpasses it...that's going to be quite an achievement).

The article is from Cleveland.com

'Legend of the Seeker', action-fantasy show, debuts locally Nov. 1

Richard (Craig Horner) is stunned when Kahlan (Bridget Regan) reveals that he isn't an ordinary peasant boy, but a Seeker destined to protect the innocent from a ruthless tyrant in "Legend of the Seeker."

The action-fantasy show premieres Saturday, Nov. 1, on WBNX Channel 55. Dust off your Xena the Warrior Princess action figure and polish your Hercules wristbands. Another fantasy-adventure television show is strapping on its sword and sandals hoping to impress viewers.

Executive producers Sam Raimi and Robert Tapert, who created "Xena: Warrior Princess," shown, have a new show in teh works: "Legend of the Seeker." Raimi and Tapert are even returning to New Zealand, the lush landscape that formed the backdrop to "Hercules" and "Xena," to make their new hour-long show.

New Interview with Rob Tapert from ComicMix

Interview with Rob at ComicMix - the interview is mainly about the Ghost House Underground DVD release but also touches on Legend of the Seeker, Xena and other Rob projects

CMix: Haha, me too! Now you are working on a new TV project, is that correct?

RT: Yes, Legend of the Seeker, which is now the title of Wizards First Rule, based on a series of books by Terry Goodkind. The books came from one of my partners, Josh Donen (son of Stanley Donen). I read the books, passed them on to Sam [Raimi] who loved them who said "Rob, this is what we should go back into the television business with!". It was an opportunity to return to TV with Action/Fantasy, which I love, and there really isn't anything on TV like it right now. We then got bankrolled by Disney and ABC, where president Mark Padowitz lead the charge. It's something we are very excited for, starting on November 1 with a big two-hour premiere. We've taken what we like from the books--the romance, fantasy, action and adventure-- and brought it to life with a great cast.

CMix: Now, with you and Sam being pioneers of fantasy television in the 90s, will we be seeing some of the same style as in Hercules and Xena?

RT: Not quite, and it's been a learning curve for us because we knew we couldn't do the same thing. Hercules and Xena were often very post modern and it wasn't really necessary to be self-referential. I can't exactly say the Seeker takes itself more seriously because we're only on episode nine at this point, so the series is still finding itself. They are both certainly different and a learning curve, not just for us, but even the department heads finding the right props to make the world come to life. But it has been interesting, but I'd say they feel like something unique unto themselves.

Legend of the Seeker Mention in Rob Tapert Interview

Rob is interviewed for Firefox News about Ghost House Pictures DVD release and also Legend of the Seeker...

[Laughing] Yeah, you're probably right. Now I know we've only got a couple more minutes, but I'm not going to be forgiven if I don't insert a couple of quick THE LEGEND OF THE SEEKER questions from my colleague Tracy Morris. Is that okay with you?

Yeah, please do. I arrived from New Zealand a little over four hours ago. So I just flew back from being in New Zealand overseeing the mix on the two-hour pilot.

Great, then this is probably more on your mind. Now, the syndication market has changed so dramatically since XENA and HERCULES were launched. And in the past you've expressed dissatisfaction with the way things have changed, so why jump back into syndication now?

Everybody said it was dead, and because they all said it was dead and there is not a single show in the genre, in the fantasy genre, or in first-run syndicated action, we believe that there is still an audience who has just been mis-served over time. And I have to give a huge amount of credit to our partners at ABC Studios for taking the leap of faith in financing, in these very troubled and difficult times, a first-run syndicated action series.

I know so many people are looking forward to this series. But the second question is, Why Wizard's First Rule?In other words, what is it that drew you and Sam Raimi to the novel, and do you see that essence in this finished product so far?

All right, so first the book came to Sam from his partner and my partner, Josh Donen who's involved in this project, the son of Stanley Donen. Sam gave the book to me. Eventually through another person, we got into Tribune, [and] they said they wanted to do it. And what we all loved creatively about Wizard's First Rule was the world Terry Goodkind created, the characters within that world. Richard, Rahl, and Kahlan Amnell and their relationships, so that's what we liked. We liked Zedd.

So we liked the characters, we liked aspects of the world, but there was subject matter in the book that just don't lend itself to television. They had to be changed to downplayed or played with a little bit. But the unrequited romance, the story of a young hero finding out who he was, the story of a beautiful young woman who could never experienced the full joys of sex without terrible repercussions, that all had an appeal to us and to our partners at ABC. In terms of what the series is on a weekly basis, we are taking threads in this first season from the Wizard's First Rule and the villain, Darken Rahl, and his henchmen and some of the events that happened there. And then [we're] just doing stand-alone versions of stories that have nothing to do [anything] within the book but are true to the nature of the heroes and the characters that Terry Goodkind created in his universe.Click here to read the entire interview

Also the Boundary - cool SFX...

One of my favourite shots - doesn't look all that great in the still but it sure looks great in the video - Kahlan nearly getting a arrow haircut while being chased by the Quad.

In addition to Jessica's role on LotS, we have a Xena fandom's favourite Amazon, Danielle Cormack (Ephiny) will be on the show! I absolutely love Danielle.

According to Danielle Cormack's agent's page, she is to appear in Legend of the Seeker.

The entry reads:

Seeking Success - Daily Telegraph

The Australian newspaper The Daily Telegraph has a brief mention of the show in today's paper with some more casting news.

Seeking success

HOME And Away's Jason Smith has joined fellow countrymen Bruce Spence and Craig Horner as well as Jay Laga'aia in New Zealand for the cast of new US syndicated series Legend Of The Seeker.

The fantasy show (based on The Sword Of Truth novels about a missing wizard) is from Sam Raimi, who also directed all three Spider-Man flicks.

Raimi must love filming in New Zealand because he also made Hercules: The Legendary Journeys and Xena: Warrior Princess there. Source

Legend of the Seeker Article - Newsarama 03 October 2008

Newsarama has an article (with two new promo pics) of Legend of the Seeker. The article is an interview with Ken Biller, who is a writer/executive producer for Legend of the Seeker.

Part of the article gives a brief look at what Seeker is about:

"In the pilot, this ancient boundary is breeched, and as a result it lets in from the other side a territory called the Midlands, along with magic, good and bad, which hasn't existed for several generations in Heartland. Also through this breech comes a powerful and mysterious woman, Kahlan [Bridget Regan], who is in possession of magical powers. She finds Richard and, much to his dismay, tells him that he is not who he thinks he is. In fact, he is destined to grow up to become a hero called The Seeker, who rises in times of great strife and trouble."

Not surprisingly, Richard finds Kahlan's story difficult to believe, but as events in the pilot continue to unfold he has no choice but to take to heart what she has revealed to him. "Kahlan is being pursued by these minions of an evil tyrant known as Darken Rahl [Craig Parker], who rules the Midlands," says Biller. "That's when Richard begins to realize that what Kahlan has told him is true, and it's also revealed that an old man, Zedd [Bruce Spence], who seems to be a sort of crazy old coot and has lived near Richard and his family for years is, in fact, a great wizard who rescued Richard as a child to avert a prophecy.
